BOTANY & ZOOLOGY GREENHOUSE
Interview with Bob Wandel
“This is where you add brilliant,” Bob Wandel said of the solution to the Botany and Zoology building’s Greenhouse. The typical garden is appealing as a backyard arrangement, but at Ohio State University’s campus, that wasn’t a viable option. Not only would it have been a misuse of valuable land, but the surrounding buildings offered too much shade for a ground level greenhouse. The Wandel & Schnell, Architects approach involved a neighboring parking garage that was designed to carry a few additional floors. The idea was to add those levels to the garage and put the greenhouse on the top.
“The greenhouse being up in the sunlight and off the floor of the university was a hanging garden,” Bob commented. It overlooked playing fields as well as Ohio Stadium. Because of this project, new building sites became available for the future.
In describing the conditions of the building, Bob told me a story of a day when the president of the university took a stroll through the original Botany and Zoology building. When the walls and ceiling started caving, it was decided a fix needed to be made. “He was barely missed by a falling window pane. He said ‘Okay, time to fix this,’” Bob said in a laugh.
