Scale is so important
by Tim Hawk on Feb.17, 2009, under hawk on architecture
It seems that in all our fuss today, scale is the one tool of the architect that is often overlooked when we design a project. And, please don’t misunderstand me….projects don’t have to have a diminuative or overtly human scale. They can be successful at any size…they can even be demonstrative or excessive. Overall, the issue with scale relates to proportion. Great architects of all ages have always held the gift of design proportion. And, even today, with the diverse stylistic practices of our current architects, the common denominator between excellent and modest design is skillful utilization of harmony in the distribution of scale and proportion.
It’s the gift of the architect. Scale and proportion. Others may manage better, others may be able to analyze data, others relate best. The successful architect offers a sense of artistry to the project that provides an intentional scale; a consistent way for the occupant to relate to the building.
