2018 AIA LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
November 9th, 2018 @ National Housing Center, Washington, DC
The 2018 AIA Leadership Institute brings together new and veteran leaders of the architecture industry to advance their skills in a one-day, interactive learning experience. Tim, Paige, Ashley, and Kai traveled to DC for this year’s conference. Here’s what they learned:
About: How do we use new technology to take over repetitive tasks so that we can focus on what makes the most impact in our designs?
Findings: With technology constantly evolving we realize it is imperative to think outside of the architecture realm in order to adapt to the future demands of architecture. “Explore the problem as asked, and then do more.”
LEADERSHIP BY DESIGN
About: Providing value to our firms as well as our communities. “Dignity is to design, what justice is to law and health is to medicine”.
Findings: Architecture should strive to empower communities. We discussed how the design should incorporate the community’s feedback and provide opportunities for the users to grow. Whether that be through equal housing, empowering through knowledge, or using local labor to provide community empowerment.
DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND LEADERSHIP
About: Leading examples of how design has value in social good.
Findings: We rediscovered the importance of process and how we can shift the conversation with campaign in our communities, and that its not all about the final outcome.
The program goals were to produce a leadership development culture, prepare veteran and next generation leaders, promote leadership in community engagement, and proliferate equity, diversity, and inclusion through leadership.
