BATH & BODY WORKS

Columbus, Ohio

CHALLENGE

An international beauty company needed to unite scattered research and development teams in one cohesive environment that could accommodate specialized laboratory spaces, administrative offices, and foster cross-functional collaboration.

SOLUTION

WSA designed an integrated workplace where research, administration, and distribution teams could work in close proximity with minimal barriers and maximum connectivity. Each research function is organized into distinct neighborhoods with transparent boundaries, allowing teams to maintain visual connections throughout the facility.

A dramatic floating statement stair serves as the central connection point between various workplace functions, promoting cross-discipline transparency through two-story openings, glass rails, and full-height glass partitions. Large windows were inserted into the existing warehouse façade to introduce natural light and create a sense of place, transforming the straightforward metal box into a warm, inviting environment.

The space utilizes the same "kit of parts" found in the parent organization's home office, ensuring consistent quality and accommodations while maintaining the corporate brand identity at this remote location. Shared community spaces—including a café with autonomous checkout, collaborative conference areas, and casual break spaces—serve as transitional zones between neighborhoods and create destinations that allow self-directed associate activity throughout the day.

IMPACT

The relocation has significantly advanced wellness within the organization by breaking down larger business units into manageable neighborhoods where teams experience more focus, less stress, and greater job satisfaction. Individual contributors cite this workplace as a marked improvement over their previous configuration, noting they now have personal space while still being able to collaborate and quickly implement innovative initiatives. This thoughtful design was recognized with an AIA Ohio Honor Award in 2020 for its successful elements that elevate the spatial experience.
