THE ELLIS

Columbus, Ohio

CHALLENGE

With the events industry upended by pandemic restrictions, BTTS Holdings sought to transform an early 1900s warehouse in Columbus' Historic Italian Village into a flexible venue that could host gatherings of varying sizes while celebrating the building's industrial heritage.

SOLUTION

WSA created a versatile event destination where historic character and contemporary adaptability blend seamlessly. The double-height ballroom serves as the heart of the venue, featuring an innovative drapery system attached to existing ceiling trusses that allows the space to be divided into thirds – enabling hosts to create more intimate atmospheres for smaller gatherings while preserving the venue's grandeur.

Throughout the space, we balanced preservation with transformation. Original brick walls and poured concrete floors ground the space in authenticity, while thoughtfully integrated design elements create moments of discovery and delight. A striking moss wall installation wraps from the entrance into the ballroom, softening the industrial architecture with natural elements that bring warmth and life to the space.

Environmental graphics were meticulously crafted to feel as though they've always belonged, while contemporary applications of matte black geometric wainscoting subtly guide traffic toward a handwritten neon sign, creating another Instagram-worthy moment.

Practical considerations enhance the guest experience without compromising aesthetics: A strategically positioned quartz countertop bar facilitates seamless catering flow. The mezzanine overlooks the main space with herringbone hardwood floors and flexible furnishings, offering a quieter vantage point that can serve multiple functions from ceremony space to VIP lounge.

IMPACT

The Ellis has emerged as a signature event destination that balances historic character with modern flexibility. BTTS Holdings began booking events based on renderings alone during construction, testament to the design's immediate market appeal. The venue's adaptable nature has proven particularly valuable during unpredictable times, allowing it to accommodate everything from intimate gatherings to large celebrations of up to 250 guests.
